About Shannon King

"The techniques I use are simple and work with every horse, every time!"

Shannon King has been working with horses since the age of 7. She first learned the basics of equine to human relations from her mother Barbara, her Grandfather, and various people on the farms where her horses had been boarded. As she grew older she found interest in showing and began successfully competing in Western Pleasure with the coaching of Eddie Wiggins, from western Washington. In the years that followed, Shannon dedicated much of her leisure time and efforts to learning everything she could about the horse and the many different worlds revolving around them (i.e., breeds, training, disciplines, etc.).

At 16 –17years old, Shannon successfully competed in local NRHA shows (Reining), with the help of trainer Jeff Cook. Taking a 1st place, the very first show! After many successful shows, she soon found an interest in Barrel Racing as well, and consistently stayed in the top 10 during her time running barrels.

In the midst of going to college at Central Washington University and racing around the barrels, Shannon was accepted into the 1999 John Lyons Certification Program. In November of 1999, Shannon graduated as one of the top in her class and was ready to go home and put her knowledge to work.

From 1999 to the present year, Shannon has presented various clinics and demonstrations across Washington State. She has also taken a maximum of 5 horses per month in for training, and has trained and started more than 40 horses since her graduation from the John Lyons school. Amidst these activities, as well as giving multiple private and group lessons, Shannon continues her journey for greater knowledge…

Since the summer of 2001 Shannon has had the privilege of working side by side with trainer Jim Briggs of Cle Elum, WA. Jim has been working with horses for more than 25 years. He draws on his experiences with horsemen such as Ray Hunt, Tom Dorrance and Buck Brannaman, as well as Olympic Eventers Richard Walker (U.K.) and Todd Trewin.

Shannon is re-learning many things that she already knew, yet finding great new ways to do them. Shannon is learning the basic and advanced principles of Dressage and Eventing. With Jim’s help, she is currently preparing for Eventing for the 2002 season.

Shannon is also looking forward to getting involved in the Reining and Barrel Racing Circuit, beginning this year, 2002.  To get involved in Shannon’s activities, e-mail us on any one of our web site pages, and let us know what you are interested in.

There are so many different approaches to working with horses. But the most important thing is that whatever approach you are using, it should work for you and the horse, comfortably. That’s why Shannon endeavors to give each student and horse various interpretations of what she is looking for, so that it is understood completely by the end of each lesson.

Just remember, the HORSE is your greatest teacher.
